The Hidden Costs of New Pallets: What Nobody Tells You

January 8, 20248 min readNorwalk Pallets Team

When procurement teams compare new versus used pallets, they typically look at the unit price. New pallet: $18. Used pallet: $7. Easy math. But the real cost of new pallets extends far beyond the sticker price.

Lead Times Cost Money

New pallets are manufactured to order in many cases, especially for non-standard sizes. Lead times of 2–4 weeks are common, and during lumber price spikes, they can stretch even longer. Every day your operations wait for pallets is a day of reduced throughput. What's that worth?

Lumber Price Volatility

New pallet prices are directly tied to lumber futures. In 2021, lumber prices tripled. In 2023, they dropped. In 2024, they're climbing again. This volatility makes budgeting nearly impossible. Used pallet prices, by contrast, are far more stable because they're not tied to raw material costs.

Disposal and Return Logistics

What happens to new pallets after they've made their trip? If your customer doesn't return them, you're buying new ones again. If they do return them, you need to inspect, store, and manage that reverse logistics. With used pallets, this circular system is already built into the model — we buy back pallets you no longer need.

Environmental Compliance Costs

Increasingly, companies are required to report on the environmental impact of their supply chain. New pallets mean new lumber, which means a bigger carbon footprint in your reports. Used pallets? They're already counted — reuse is the greenest option, and it looks great on your ESG disclosures.

Storage Overhead

New pallets often arrive in bulk to get volume discounts. But storing 1,000 pallets you won't use for three months costs warehouse space — space that could be generating revenue. With used pallets, you can order smaller quantities more frequently, optimizing your inventory.

The True Cost Comparison

When you factor in lead time losses, price volatility, disposal, compliance, and storage, new pallets often cost 40–60% more than the invoice suggests. Used pallets, properly graded and sourced locally, deliver the same performance at a fraction of the true cost.
